For A/W 2007, Christopher Bailey explored Burberry's military heritage, establishing a distinctive aesthetic that has come to define Prorsum menswear in the period that followed. Sitting somewhere between militant masculinity and refined sartorialism, the collection was undoubtedly one of Bailey's strongest. This handsome coat is a quintessential Prorsum design that combines Bailey's heritage-driven aesthetic with an exquisite silhouette and the house's typical craftsmanship.

As to be expected from Prorsum outerwear, the silhouette is sharp and flattering with strong shoulders, a contoured waist and fitted sleeves. The front closes with seven large buttons that are closely positioned for a sharp and modern look. The neck has a chunky collar that can stand up and is finished with a hook and eye closure with a detachable throat latch. The coat's strong shape is further enhanced by large epaulettes that emphasize the shoulders. The waist features two buttoned patch pockets, while the cuffs have buttoned tabs.  The uncompromising design is given substance by the heavy virgin wool fabric. Warm and substantial, the high quality cloth has an oversized twill weave with a distinctive chevron pattern.

The construction and finishing of this piece are exemplary. First of all, the fabric's intricate pattern is matched flawlessly between various panels. This is beautifully manifested in the front pockets and undercollar. All seams have double reinforcing (described by Burberry as 'luggage stitching') that further enhances the coat's structured look. The oversize buttons are engraved with the Burberry logo and realised in matte black resin, while the metal hardware has an antique finish. The chunky leather buckle of the belt is handmade and finely edged like all traditionally made leather goods. The interior is supremely hand-finished with hand-placed shoulders and thick black sateen lining embroidered with Burberry's Equestrian Knight emblem. The sleeves are lined in contrasting white sateen with black stripes. Elegant silk piping and pick-stitching done by hand frame the edges of the lining. The Burberry Prorsum label is stamped on vintage bridle leather, while the neck features the house's signature heavy chain pull.

An elegant and beautifully constructed winter piece, this coat has the credentials for becoming a timeless outerwear staple.
